Huntlight FT-01XSE 3W LED light
I'll be honest, I'm a flashlight junkie. It all started way back when I was knee high to a grasshopper. I wasn't exactly fond of darkness, so flashlights were one of my favorite toys. It started with a green mini maglight powered by 2 AAA batteries. It wasn't long before I had moved up to a 2 cell maglight, then on to a 4 cell. I had pretty much thought Maglights were the best thing since sliced bread. Then a was introduced to a Surefire G2. Wow, how could something that much smaller than a 4 cell maglight put out that much power. So over the last few years I guess you could say I have collected various Surefire lights. It started with a G2, then a 6P, all the way to my previous carry light, an A2 aviator. I thought I had found the best light for my needs in the A2.
Then came SHOT show 2007, where I was introduced to the new Huntlight LED from J.S. Burly's. AT first I thought it was probably just another cheaply made surefire knockoff. I could not have been more wrong in my initial assumption. This light is every bit as good as my A2, but brighter and 75% cheaper. Over the past month that I have had my FT-01XSE, I have beat the crap out of it. The bezel has been scrapped up, dropped down 2 flights of stairs, and used as a blunt impact device. Its still ticking, and I'm not surprised. This is not a lightweight light. The first time you pick it up, you will know its a quality light. I could not be happier with this light.
As of late I have been shying away from incandescent lights, and moving toward the LED offering from various companies. They produce a whiter light, and don't get nearly as hot as their incandescent counterparts. Plus they normally are able to run for a longer time thanks to digital circuit regulation.
In short, these are quality lights at a very fair, very low price. Can I get a FT01PJ XR-E Cree P4 to test out? Pretty please?
X-Ray Vision by SOG.
I was impressed with this knife the moment I picked it up. I knew SOG made a quality blade, but I didn't have any experience with them. I had always been partial to Kershaw, and Spyderco. I am glad I gave this one a try.
The reason I like the locking system on the Xray, is 2 fold. The first reason being, I dont like spring assisted knives. I feel that they have a place for certain people, and I personally don't like them for the uses that "my" knife might see. I have cut myself more than once on a knife that has opened in my pocket, without me knowing it. Thats not a fun feeling. This knife wont open by itself. The locking system actually puts pressure on the blade when it is in its closed position, making it even harder to accidently open. The second reason is I can close it one handed. Most folding knives require the use of 2 hands to close the knife, the SOG doesn't. You can open and close it instantly with one hand, without really thinking about it. With a little practice, its just as fast as a spring assisted knife.
With the way the pocket clip is oriented, this knife will fit on your pocket, and not scrape you hand when you reach into your pocket. Either for the knife or your keys. Its a smooth surface that wont rip or cut your skin or clothes. It also makes it so that when you grab the knife with one had you are ready to deploy the blade. You dont have to turn the knife around to open it. Plus it just feels right in your hand. Its is very balanced, and the blade lockup is as tight as any linier locking knife I have ever had my hands on.
The blade that SOG uses is a very high quality ATS-34 steel blade that is sharp, and keeps its edge. I have yet to mess the edge up, or dull it. The tonto point that SOG uses makes for a very strong knife, and the thickness of the blade stays consistent from tip to handle. The main thing I like about this knife is the Arc-Lock system. It allows the user to open and close the knife with 1 hand, in an instant. That is very important to me, as I am not a fan of assisted opening knives. Just more things to break in my opinion. The blade is as sharp as any other blade I have encountered, and has a great bead blasted finish that looks great.
